Founded in 1861 in Seattle, the University of Washington (UW) is one of the world's most prestigious universities, located in one of the most scenic and livable cities in the United States. UW enrolls more than 60,000 students each year and thrives as a center for groundbreaking research across various fields, including medicine, education, public affairs, aeronautics, and business. While the largest UW campus is situated in the heart of Seattle, new buildings have emerged to meet student learning and living needs, located west of the campus near a new rail station and bike paths. These halls contribute to an emerging, walkable, and vibrant student housing district.
A Prestigious University for Research
The University of Washington is considered one of the best universities globally, ranked No. 8 worldwide and No. 2 among U.S. public institutions by U.S. News & World Report. It has also been recognized by Reuters as the most innovative public university in the world.
UW offers a wide range of studies, including more than 300 programs and over 600 degree options. As a major research center, UW attracts more federal research funding than any other public school in the United States. The distinguished faculty includes seven Nobel Prize winners and 17 MacArthur Fellows, also known as "genius grant" recipients.

The New Halls
Maple and Terry Halls are two mixed-use residence halls featuring linked amenities and public plazas. These new buildings include 1,100 student rooms, academic classrooms, and University of Washington Housing and Food Services offices. The campus features new bike paths, pedestrian connections, and public plazas, enhancing connectivity to the city and the main campus. They reflect the preference of today’s students for living in vibrant urban villages.
These diverse settings help students live healthily, explore new activities, and connect socially during their freshman year. And what better way to connect than with the support of our Tools for Togetherness? The public plazas between buildings for instance have Extremis Picniks scattered around, which invite the students to take a seat for a tête-à-tête from the moment they meet.
