Extremis wins iF Gold Award

Only two weeks ago, Dirk Wynants received not one but two German Design Awards for his creations Sol+Luna (gold!) and Anker. Last Friday, the Big Boss of Extremis was once again invited to the glamorous iF Design Award Ceremony in Munich. The Virus picnic table was awarded an iF Gold Award!

Extremis wins iF Gold Award

More than aesthetics

Extremis was the only Belgian company, and Virus was the only piece of furniture to receive an award. Why? "Because it’s quite exceptional in our sector for an item to be about more than just aesthetics. Design is so much more than just form," says a proud Dirk Wynants. "Only the companies that set the standard in their sector are rewarded with a gold award. At Extremis we succeed in doing exactly that, time and again, with many of our products. That we, as a small company, are mentioned in the same breath as all these famous names and shining examples in their sector is an exceptional achievement."

Logical form

It’s not the first time that Extremis has been honored with an iF design award, but GOLD is a very exceptional achievement. The bar is very high, and it is about more than having a great innovative idea that is perfectly executed down to the last detail. The life cycle of the product and its relationship with people and the environment are at least as important.

The judges' verdict was clear: “As a cleverly conceived picnic table from production to use, Virus won us over with its logical form. Well-proportioned, stable and excellently constructed, the quality of this product is visible. The fact that you can sit down at the table without having to lift your legs is an intelligent solution. A contemporary approach to this product category.”

The other companies that were called up to the stage included Ferrari, Bulgari, Dell, Google, Samsung, Sony, Porsche, Audi, Philips and other big names.

For 65 years, the iF Design Award, a World Design Guide initiative, has been a worldwide badge of honor for outstanding designs. With 6,402 submissions from 54 countries, a record number of submissions were received in this jubilee year. Never before had so many products and designs been included in the competition.

At the end of January 2018, a jury of 63 independent international experts gathered at the Port of Hamburg to select the winners of the iF Design Awards 2018. Take a look behind the scenes at this tiring but exciting three-day examination and assessment period in this video.
