Hot springs wellness at Yugawara
Tools for togetherness

Nestled in the southernmost part of western Kanagawa Prefecture, Yugawara Onsen is a serene escape adjacent to the famed Onsen resorts of Atami and Hakone. Just a short trip from Tokyo, it offers a perfect blend of relaxation and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for a refreshing day trip. Spanning 4 kilometers along the Chitose and Fujiki Rivers, this Onsen resort boasts high-temperature springs, with some reaching over 80 degrees Celsius. The sight of steam rising from Onsen turrets adds to the area's charm, a testament to its rich thermal heritage.

A place full of history

One of the oldest Onsens in the Kanto region, Yugawara Onsen, is celebrated in Japan's ancient Manyoshu anthology. Renowned for its healing properties, it has been a sought-after destination since the Edo period (1600-1868), known for its effectiveness in treating wounds and promoting recovery, a practice known as "Touji." The Onsen gained prominence during the Russo-Japanese and Sino-Japanese wars, attracting politicians, military officers, and artists seeking respite and healing.

In the Middle Ages, the natural hot springs of Yugawara served as therapeutic baths for warriors and villagers. By the Edo period, these communal baths, known as "Murayu" and "Soyu," were integral to the community, managed carefully as a shared resource. The Meiji period (1868-1912) saw the rise of inns, transforming the area into a haven for those seeking physical and spiritual rejuvenation. The legacy of Yugawara as a healing sanctuary continued, with its scenic beauty inspiring writers and painters alike.

Healing at the terrace

Today, "Manyo Park" stands as a testament to this rich history. Once the villa of Meiji-era industrialist Magobei Okura, the park was opened for medical treatment and named "Youjouen" or "Okura Park." The spirit of Soyu, nurtured by the villagers as a communal treasure, lives on. Collaborating with the local community, we at Extremis are proud to contribute to this legacy, providing our Pantagruel picnic tables with Inumbra parasols on the terrace of this historic Onsen. Here, visitors can experience the timeless charm of Yugawara, take a breath, and recharge for the daily hustle.
